We build software for a living, and sometimes that means building something simply because it is useful to us — and might be useful to you too. CHP Incidents is one of those: a live, no-frills view of traffic incidents reported by the California Highway Patrol, all on one page.
What it does
The CHP publishes incident activity from its dispatch centers across the state. CHP Incidents pulls that in and lays it out so you can actually read it:
- Statewide, in near real time. Collisions, hazards, closures, car fires and more, refreshed every few minutes.
- Filter to what matters. Narrow by region or incident type, or flag fatal and motorcycle-involved incidents.
- Readable at a glance. Each incident shows the location, the CHP code, the area, and how long ago it was reported.
- Follow an area. Optional email alerts and an RSS feed if you want updates for a specific region.
Why we made it
The data is public, but it is not easy to read or to follow over time. We wanted a version we could glance at — to see how the roads look before a drive, or to keep an eye on an area during a storm. So we built it and put it online for anyone who finds it handy.
A couple of notes
CHP Incidents is unofficial and is not affiliated with or endorsed by the California Highway Patrol. It is free to view, and it is one of the side projects we run ourselves rather than sell.
